About This Release

Camille Howard’s second volume of X-temporaneous Boogie captures the pianist and vocalist in full stride across jump blues and boogie-woogie territories, recorded for Specialty Records during the early 1950s. Her rollicking, blues-inflected keyboard work and earthy vocal delivery anchor these sides with the swagger of West Coast R&B, where stride piano meets jukebox immediacy. Howard’s command of both instrument and microphone—rare for female pianists of the era—made her a standout fixture on the Specialty roster.
