About This Release

Bennie Green’s trombone and Gene Ammons' tenor saxophone lock into a swinging dialogue across Vee-Jay Records' mid-1950s session, trading solos over hard bop grooves with the kind of conversational ease that defined the label’s jazz output. Both players were seasoned sectionmen—Green fresh from Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra, Ammons from the Jug Quartet—and their chemistry crackles through these straightforward, groove-heavy arrangements. This is soul jazz before the term existed, blues-inflected and utterly direct.
