About This Release

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “New York, New York” captures the group at the peak of their Sugar Hill Records tenure, when Bronx DJ culture was crystallizing into the first generation of hip hop records. The track rides a propulsive breakbeat with Melle Mel and Kidd Creole trading verses over scratches and talk-box flourishes, documenting the city’s five boroughs with the specificity that defined early Sugar Hill releases. A foundational artifact of proto-hip hop production and MCing that established the template for decades to come.
