Down’s third album finds the New Orleans supergroup—featuring Pantera’s Dimebag Darrell and Phil Anselmo alongside Corrosion of Conformity’s Mike Dean—deepening their sludgy fusion of stoner rock and Southern rock. Over the Under strips back the swagger of its predecessors for heavier, more introspective riffing, with Darrell’s guitar work cutting through thick, distorted grooves while Anselmo’s vocals oscillate between spoken-word menace and primal howls.
