About This Release

Pearls Before Swine’s 1968 debut for ESP-Disk' marries folk rock’s introspection with psychedelic rock’s lysergic abstraction, creating something genuinely unclassifiable. Tom Rapp’s nasal tenor floats over arrangements that shift from fingerpicked acoustic to orchestral swells and backwards guitars, while lyrics oscillate between nursery rhyme whimsy and existential dread. ESP-Disk’s roster of free jazz and avant-garde experimentalists provided the perfect home for this singular vision.
