Starday Records was started in Beaumont, Texas in 1952 by Pappy Daily and Jack Starnes, Jr. The "Starday" name is a combination of Starnes' and Daily's names. The label recorded country & western, Cajun and sacred music. Short history 1952 - Starday Records founded 1953 - Don Pierce (2) became the president of the label 1954 - Grand Ole Opry's New Star" by George Jones (2) released 1954 - Hollywood Records (2) label - owned by Don Pierce (2), consolidated 1955 - Pierce and Daily purchase Starnes' share of the label 1957 - January 1st merged into Mercury as Mercury Starday. In Dec. the headquarters moved to Madison, TN. - the distributor Starday International Sales, Inc. appeared 1958 - Mercury agreement dissolved. Pierce buys Daily's share of the label, Daily leaves the label 1964 - Nashville subsidiary started 1968 - Starday purchased King Records (3) 1969/1970 - name of the company changed to Starday-King Records, Inc. 1971 - Starday-King sold to Lin Broadcasting July 1971 - Lin sold the Starday-King labels to Tennessee Recording and Publishing 1975 - labels sold to GML, Inc., Starday moved under Gusto Records, Inc.
