About

The Walt Disney "Little Gem" series was a series of 7" 45 RPM or 6" 78rpm singles or EPs, introduced mid 1960. Records were always released with paper picture sleeves with advertisements on the back for other Disneyland releases. Initially, the back cover had listings from other Little Gem series records inside a large pink shape (first an "O" and shortly after a "U" - up to release LG-720). By 1961 the back cover had changed to the familiar design with the blue banner and listings of Disneyland LP offerings. The music consisted of tracks pulled from their existing LPs and were often uncredited. Both 78 RPM and 45 RPM versions were released concurrently, until release LG-785 in 1965 at least when the 78 RPM versions were discontinued. Note that 78 RPM versions beyond this number may exist, but have not appeared yet. Releases listed on the back can be used to determine an approximate date for the record, and many are only slightly different. The series ended in May 1971 and was officially discontinued in March 1972 along with all other 45 RPM records, in favor of the Four Complete Songs series of 7" LPs. A similar, unnamed series was reintroduced in 1975 after the retirement of Disneyland Records president Jimmy Johnson (10).
