Audiobook publisher, founded in 1975 by Duvall Hecht as a mail order publisher and distributer for unabridged audiobook recordings on audio cassette and later on CD. Their main market used to be schools and libraries. In 2001 the company was bought by Random House. Duvall Hecht became consultant, while Ron Prowell became president of Books On Tape. In 2013 Random House and Penguin (4) merged to form Penguin Random House LLC, which operates as a subsidiary of Bertelsmann since 2020.
