About
Cibo Matto, formed in New York City in 1994 by the dynamic duo of Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori, quickly carved out a unique niche within the electronic and alternative rock scene. Their debut album, “Viva! La Woman” (1996), showcased an innovative fusion of trip-hop, jazz, and electronic music, all cleverly centered around a culinary theme. The album broke new ground with its eclectic mix of samples and styles, setting the stage for the genre-blending tendencies of electronic music in the late '90s.
By the time they released “Stereo Type A” in 1999, Cibo Matto had broadened their musical palette, incorporating elements of hip-hop, bossa nova, and rock into their sound. The addition of Sean Lennon, Timo Ellis, and Duma Love to the lineup for this album enriched their compositions, offering a more diverse and sophisticated sonic experience. Cibo Matto’s ability to blend disparate genres into a cohesive and engaging whole contributed to the evolution of electronic music, influencing a wave of artists interested in the intersections between electronic, rock, and experimental music.
