Emerging from Denver’s early 1980s underground scene, Zozobra built a reputation as an avant-garde experimental act that pushed the boundaries of electronic and multimedia performance. The collective—anchored by Steve Antonio, Stephen Wray Lobdell, Jeff Hunt, and Need Windham—created immersive sonic experiences that blended electronic instrumentation with innovative visual elements, including 8mm projections and custom-designed light installations that were integral to their artistic vision.

Known for their intense, exploratory approach to sound design, Zozobra’s live performances were characterized by dense, layered compositions that often culminated in orchestrated crescendos of synchronized audio and visual elements. Though their recorded output remained limited, their experimental ethos and commitment to multimedia integration established them as influential pioneers within the underground electronic music landscape of the era.
