About

# Propaganda

Propaganda are a pioneering synth-pop group from Düsseldorf, Germany, formed in 1982 by Ralf Dörper (formerly of Die Krupps) and Andreas Thein. Signed to Trevor Horn's influential ZTT label in 1983, the band emerged as key figures in the post-industrial synth-pop movement. Their debut album *A Secret Wish* (1985) showcased their distinctive blend of intricate synthesizer work, angular production, and evocative vocals, establishing them as innovators in the genre alongside contemporaries like Depeche Mode and The Human League.

Throughout their career, Propaganda has undergone multiple line-up changes while maintaining their commitment to electronic experimentation. Key releases include the landmark single "Dr. Mabuse" (1984) and subsequent albums on ZTT and Virgin Records, with later work appearing on Amontillado Music. The band's influence extends beyond their original run, with members continuing to contribute to electronic music through solo projects, remixes, and live performances that reinterpret their classic material.

In recent years, Propaganda has experienced a creative resurgence, with both the Brücken/Freytag and Dörper/Mertens iterations active on the live circuit and in the studio. The band's enduring legacy reflects their pioneering role in shaping the sophisticated production aesthetics and conceptual depth that defined 1980s synth-pop and continue to influence electronic music today.
